Sew Much Fun Hong Kong

If you’ve been thinking about an Asian sewing adventure, time is running out to sign up for the American Sewing Guild’s Sew Much Fun Hong Kong 2010 tour. This week-long adventure begins on November 30th as the group departs on a United Airlines jet from San Francisco and lands in this enchanted fabric mecca a few (OK, many!) hours later.

In addition to shopping for fabrics to your heart’s desire, the group also tours a costume shop where wonderful garb is made for amusement parks, the Chinese Opera and several other venues. Rumor has it there will also be a remnant sale of some of the company’s leftovers.

There’s also sightseeing, a Tai Chi lesson, and a cruise to Lamma Island for the farewell dinner. Optional tours are also available during your free time.

Registration ends on August 15, so sign up this week by visiting the American Sewing Guild site and filling out the form to reserve your space. Friends and spouses are also welcome!

Create Your Own Lunch Bags

If you work outside the home, you know that taking your own lunch can not only save money, but it can also be a much healthier alternative to eating out. C&T’s new book titled Lunch Bags offers up 25 clever and attractive brown bag replacements to tote that lunch in style. Some are insulated, others vinyl lined, but all share a common bond of being handmade and fashionable…a switch from most lunch carriers. This book is a “design collective,” so each bag is made by a different designer. Some are so cool they can double as tote bags and purses on the weekends. Lots of fun photos and illustrated instructions. 128 pages.

SewaNew theme for National Sewing Month 2010

SewaNew, the theme for September is National Sewing Month 2010, promotes every sewing enthusiast’s unique ability to enhance his or her personal style through fabric and machine.

It’s no secret that sewing is hot! We’ve been hearing reports of teens and young adults filling learn-to-sew classes and even some schools are bringing back previously abandoned sewing programs. Many are also returning to sewing after years – or even decades – away to find amazing new fabric choices, patterns that are easier to use and tech-savvy machines with set-it-and-forget-it features.  A friend of mine who sold her sewing machine in a garage sale 10 years ago (telling me she never expected to sew again) recently purchased a new machine. The enthusiasm that I see in her now was absent the first time around. Previously, her sewing was utilitarian. Now it’s become exciting!

Of course, those of us who have continued to pursue this wonderful outlet know that it’s the creative satisfaction that keeps us coming back. And this year’s National Sewing Month theme celebrates the excitement we all share for sewing.

September will be here before we know it:

  • Promotional materials are available as free downloads from the National Sewing Month website.
  • Don’t miss the Accessorize Your Life contest We are challenging you to sew up your best accessory idea. There are 8 categories and the top 3 from all entries will win great prizes (prizes to be announced August 5, 2010). Contest ends September 30, 2010.
  • Videos and projects will be available
  • Special Guidelines are being introduced for National Sewing Month
  • Follow us on Facebook and Twitter!

Happy sewing!
